(CPO201) HALF DAY THE TRACE OF THE 33 MINERS

Descripción: After leaves the Hotel to downtown city of Copiapo; we will go to San Jose Mine, located approximately 29 Kilometers Northwest from the city center of Copiapo and 33 Kilometers from Caldera, where 33 miners were trapped for 69 days. 
Going deep into the desert of Atacama, you will be amazed by the scenic view which is simply extraordinary. While ascent, you will have the unique opportunity to go past countless sand dunes. At this point of the tour, we will make a stop to photographs capturing the most incredible and driest desert in the world. Once in the Performance Center, very close to the site of the rescue, one of the rescued miners himself will welcome you and tell you, first hand, his experience of being trapped 700 meters below ground level for 69 days. Of course, he will be pleased to answer all your questions. You will have access to a wide selection of accessories as well as some basic operating elements the miners used for keeping themselves alive and have contact with their families ground level. Following the historical overview, a distinctive and unprecedented treat awaits. The actual capsule named “THE FENIX 3”, designed and built to bring up the miners to surface, one by one, on the 13th October, 2010. Finally, you will be able to walk all along Camp Hope, the place where the miners’ families prayed and waited for news every hot day and every cold night. Return at 13:00 pm to the Hotel in Copiapo.

Description: Exit the Hotel to downtown city of Copiapo and its main square to continue to Tierra Amarilla Mining Museum located 16 kilometers ap¬proximately from the city center of Copiapo. You will learn about the geology of the region of Atacama and be able to understand the two most relevant economic activities here: Agriculture and Mining, be¬ing the latest the most significant throughout the years. The Muse¬um was built inside an old restored house of top inherited value.
Ahead, continuing through the history of Atacama, you will head up north towards x San Jose mine and the exact location of the res¬cue of the miners. Afterwards, you will come close to the coast to visit The Paleontolo¬gy Museum located at the Port of Caldera. Be impressed by a recre¬ation of the biggest and most fero¬cious shark ever known on Earth dating 13 million years ago: The Carcharotes Megalodon. The Meg¬alodon, or “big teeth”, could mea¬sure up to 20 meters long and 50 tons weight, approximately.
Lunch at Bahia Inglesa, and after that returns to the hotel.

Description:  Exit the hotel to start off and in¬teresting excursion through the valley, 47 Kilometers up to a small town called Juan Godoy, named after a humble logger discoverer of Chañarcillo silver Mine which brought wealth and prosperi¬ty to the whole country of Chile. The Mine, as well as, the city of Chañarcillo is now abandoned. Continuing our tour East side you can visit “El Transito” mining Museum. Here you will be able to experience how life was at that time and the miners who work individually and with great effort to support their families.. Next, we will get to an impressive area dedicated to big scale mining. Our excursion continues with a visit to a melting copper pipe from the time of The Incas, called “Viña del Cerro”, which represents the most complex and well organized met¬allurgic center by the times The Incas spread all over the country. Here, you will be shown the entire process of melting copper, while enjoying a spectacular view of the valley. Our excursion comes to an end in the magnificent Mining Mu¬seum Tierra Amarilla on our way back to Copiapo. The Museum was built in a restored house of top in¬herited value for the city and their citizens. Return to Copiapo and the hotel.

Description: A walking pace tour through Copiapo streets, its people and culture, visiting the main sites of the city, such as: The Regional Museum, The University of Atacama, place where the third original train to travel through South America and the first in Chile is now exhibited, Mineralogical Museum, keeping a strange mineral called “Silver Rosicler” extinct nowadays, and The Matta Avenue, which has a cultural legacy and historic heritage.

Description: Exit Copiapo city, this excursion will take us east side directly to The Andes Mountain Range. The way is soft and the ascent is rather moderated during the ride. During our ride, we will be witnesses of beautiful Flamencos, salty waters as in The Santa Rosa saltwater lagoon which belongs to The Nevado Tres Cruces National Park, and mid-altitude highlands as in The Isla hill located north of the Maricunga Salt Flat. The Nevado Tres Cruces National Park offers a wonderful view, balanced by the white of the snow and the blue of their lagoons. The site consisting of The Maricunga salt flat and The Santa Rosa Lagoon in the first area, and The Negro Francisco Lagoon and The Astaburuaga river mouth, make it the perfect place to experience full connection with nature. We will watch a desert landscape, wherein its vegetation, though scarce, will not prevent us from taking a deep breath as a sign of an awe exclamation. Furthermore, continuing the entertaining tour, we will see flats, wetlands, and some species of sweet grass family.
The Tres Cruces massif stands out over the rest of the mountains for its three independent peaks which rise sharply above the 6.000 m.a.s.l. The White Mountain Range presents small mountain glaciers which remain intact during the summer to give birth to The Lamas River, which in turn provides water to The Santa Rosa Lagoon. During our trip, we will discover diverse species of Highland birds, for example, pink flamingos, geese, ducks, as well as the presence of guanacos and vicuñas that enrich the lagoons and their surroundings. The Maricunga salt flat is a close basin caused by the crossing of the mountain ranges of Claudio Gay and Domeyko.
At the end of the tour, we will reach the amazing Laguna Verde, located over the 4.200 m.a.s.l and surrounded by volcanoes and rough hills which rise above the 5.500 m.a.s.l. Their surroundings are the perfect scenery for hikers. The identity of the area is simply spectacular, feautuning the saltwater lagoon of turquoise color. The native fauna is very scarce, and it is limited to piuquenes and flamingos. Back to the hotel in the late afternoon.

(CPO304) FULL DAY DUNES OF ATACAMA

Description: At 8:30 we will leave the hotel directly to check point 1. There we will deflate tires to climb up the dunes towards San Jose mine, place where the 33 miners were rescued. We will have a quick snack. After that, we will continue to follow in the footsteps of Dakar dunes to reach the highest dune in Latin America called Medanoso.
At 14:00 lunch at the Medanoso Dune. Then, start off tour activities, such as driving lessons in the sand, sand boarding and photo shoot. Finish near 18:00 hours and arrive to Copiapo at 19:30 hours approximately.

(CPO305) FULL DAY PAN DE AZUCAR NATIONAL PARK

Description: Only 125 kilometers ahead from the Port of Caldera and 26 kilome¬ters north of Chañaral, it is located this amazing Natural Park with its spectacular cliffs and nice weath¬er during the year. This is a “must see” tourist sights and opportunity for every person concerned with botanic and geology, amateurs and professionals. The Pan de Azucar National Park is a magic place with an 800 m.a.s.l cliff which has been eroded by a dense mist called camancha¬ca (cloud banks that move inland). At sunset, the mist dampens the existing flora, cacti and bushes spreading among bright red ochre rocks. Its coast is washed by tur-quoise color water beaches suit¬able for bathing. The Park, created in 1985, covers near 40.000 Ha that includes Pan de Azucar Na¬tional Park, Las Chatas islets, and Las Mariposas rock formation.
The expert guide will take you through an area so you can appre¬ciate about 27 types of cacti. Its native fauna involves guanacos, chilla foxes, and some reptiles. On the coast, sea otters (chungungos, as they are called by the locals), sea lions, and Humbolt penguins, a very vulnerable specie. Return to Copiapo by coast.

Description: At the port of Caldera, there can be found the major fossils record in Chile and, indeed very relevant to South American and the World involving reptiles, birds and marine mammals dating 16- 17 millions years old.
Our tours will take us to The Paleontology Museum. Be impressed by a recreation of the biggest and most ferocious shark ever known on Earth dating 13 million years old: The Carcharocles Megalodon. The Megalodon, or “big teeth”, could measure up to 20 meters long and 50 tons weight, approximately.
We will now be taken to get know a beautiful bay called Bahia Inglesa, located 6 km from The Port of Caldera, where all these fossils were unearthed, and nowadays constitutes The Paleontology Park of Atacama.

(CPO306) FULL DAY LLANOS DE CHALLE NATIONAL PARK & HUASCO COAST

Description: This tour starts off a car ride from Copiapo towards the coast through the beauties of The Flowering Desert of Atacama, Llanos de Challe National Park with its wonderful cacti, and wild guanacos, its endless beaches and historical corners of ancient mining town. Our excursion will take us primarily to Llanos de Challe National Park near the coast of Atacama. The Park has an extension of 45.708 Ha and was created in 1994. The Park has a desert-shoreline ecosystem that shapes the habitat of more than 200 rare but beautiful species of plants which includes Garra de Leon. The flora constitutes a special attraction to The Park with its countless plant species, most of them endemic to the area. In the coast line, humidity and occasional rain contributes that the vegetation be more abundant inland. The plant species abounding in these lands are cacti, and “geofitas”, which are plants that has an underground wet bulb enabling them store reserve substances. The fauna of The Park is related to desert plant communities. Birds are the ones having a great number of types, among them are the turk, the peregrine falcon and the condor. The mammals are mainly guanacos, chilla and culpeo foxes. 
The tour will take us to a quite ancient small town called Totoral, an oasis in the Atacama Desert where we will get to know their citizens’ way of life and traditions. We will have a typical countryside dish. After that, returns to the hotel.

Description: The cleanest and most transparent skies in the world are found in the North of Chile and the Inca Gold Astronomical Center gives us a great opportunity to enjoy and learn about our universe. Quite a unique educational experience is the Astronomical Center of the Region of Atacama.
Departure at 18:30 from the hotel to Inca de Oro which is located at 81 km north of Copiapo, we will see the Atacama Desert Views on the way to Camino de Inca, where the town Inca de Oro and the mine history are named “World Heritage”. In the Astronomical Center we will watch the sky through a 14” Meade LX 200 high precision telescope. Return to Copiapo around 23:30.
